January 26, 2000 — December 17, 2000

On Nov. 29 at 10pm ET David Blaine’s third TV special airs on ABC-TV. This edition, titled “David Blaine: Frozen In Time” will culminate with a live segment from New York City where Blaine will be removed from a huge block of ice where he has been encased since Nov. 27 at 8am. The 3-day ordeal will be covered by many media outlets and Blaine’s new website (www.davidblaine.com) produced by iCast will feature a live web feed featuring video and the tracking of his vital signs.

As in the past we will try to keep you abreast of all the pertinent details and exclusive information as it becomes available. This page will be a living document which will be updated at least once a day — most likely several times a day — as we get new information. You might feel that the information is an overload but it is an important historical record of the events leading to the TV show and the endurance stunt.

DECEMBER 17, 2000 – SUNDAY

• A David Blaine reference: “In a truly bizarre event, magician David Blaine, 27, spent 62 hours encased in a block of ice in New York’s Times Square. He emerged on national television Nov. 29 unable to move his legs. DECEMBER 16, 2000 – SATURDAY
• David Blaine makes it into TV Guide’s Cheers and Jeers section as a Cheer: “Debunkers griped that air pumped into the icy sarcophagus kept frigidity at bay (think igloo), but the disoriented, pained state in which Blaine emerged convinced us that the endurance test was no winter wonderland. DECEMBER 11, 2000 – MONDAY
• Right after David Blaine’s TV special on Nov. 29 Channel 10 Eyewitness news in Miami interviewed 82-year old Dale Thorpe claiming to be the “Original Ice Man.” During the interview which was conducted while Thorpe was lying in a coffin made of ice he said “…Windward Beach, 1934, Kansas City, that’s when I first started into this business [of being encased in ice].” Doug Dunbar reported “…over 50 years ago. Thorpe made $500 a week on a vaudeville tour, lying for hours sometimes days inside an ice coffin wearing far less then Blaine’s black pants, shirt and knit hat.” They showed many photos to verify that Thorp actually did this while Thorpe explained that what he did 50+ years ago was much more difficult.(12/11)
DECEMBER 10, 2000 – SUNDAY
• The Washington Post ran a poem with David Blaine as a recurring theme. DECEMBER 8, 2000 – FRIDAY
• David Blaine was the 12th most searched term on the Lycos search engine for the week ending Dec. 2. A Guardian article points out “Surprise climber: David Blaine excited great interest as he encased  himself in ice in Times Square for two-and-a-half days. DECEMBER 7, 2000 – THURSDAY
• The official Nielsen Media Research ratings are in and the David Blaine: Frozen In Time TV special finished 20th for the week of Nov.27 – Dec. 3 with a 10.1 rating and a 16 share which translates to a viewership of 15.88 million people. Blaine is described as “…reviving an old vaudeville tradition: the death-defying act. DECEMBER 1, 2000 – FRIDAY
• David Blaine is featured in a New York Times article which covers his condition after the event and reveals new information about his personal life. After watching the end of the TV special with the reporter she describes him, “When Mr. Blaine sees himself unlocked from the ice, mumbling about having lost his mind, tears come to his eyes. He’s sitting on a chair on wheels, he is told, unable to move his legs; he says he has lost money on the stunt; he says he would never do it again, and he is crying.” About Blaine’s finances, “He also says that while ABC paid him $1 million, he is now $150,000 in debt. But he says it isn’t about the money. It’s about testing yourself. NOVEMBER 30, 2000 – THURSDAY
• The David Blaine live webcast which was produced by iCast increased the traffic to that site. Variety reported that “The three-day Webcast significantly increased traffic to the site, from around 100,000 visitors to almost 1 million.” Unfortunately iCast went out of business immediately after the webcast. • David Blaine who has taken the New York press by storm is featured in a New York Times story which describes him when he came out of the ice as “The magician who emerged from the increasingly unstable ice box seemed a shadow of the confident, robust, shirtless fellow who entered two days before.” Describing the last day of the event, “Hours before his escape, the thrill of the chill appeared to have been lost for Mr. Blaine, who looked pale and cold inside his ice bubble, often putting his hands in his pockets or blowing into his stocking cap. • David Blaine was rushed to a hospital after completing his icy stunt last night. Explaining his condition he said that his ankles are swollen and he is not able to walk. He expects to leave the hospital in a couple of days and be back to normal very soon. His biggest problem toward the end is that he became delusional and thought he was dead.(11/30)

David Blaine has revived the spectacular outdoor stunts of an earlier day, now tricked out with 21st century technology. • ABC News reported that “Magician David Blaine was freed from an eight-foot tall block of ice tonight before a crowd of onlookers chanting his name, after nearly three days inside the giant cube. After more than 61 hours, engineers and paramedics pulled Blaine from the ice block. He was clearly disoriented, unable to walk on his own and complained of severe foot pain. With his girlfriend by his side, Blaine was driven off in an ambulance.
