Steve Beam, who is best known for his Semi-Automatic books and Trap Door magazine, was in the area all last week where we bounced around the major magic collections. He also did a lecture full of entertaining magic that fooled everyone in attendance.
After the lecture I offered to buy what he had left. He asked how many of each item I wanted. I told him that I would take everything. What I didn’t know is that he had a car full of books, booklets, and lecture notes that were supposed to go to another event. The good news is that I got him to autograph everything, and he also help with the trailers.
Over the next few weeks, I will introduce you to outstanding books and booklets that are full of relatively easy card magic that will fool and entertain laypeople as well as honest magicians. Below are the first two booklets that I think you will enjoy.
Remember that Steve’s philosophy is basically, why waste your time learning magic that only fools and entertains laypeople when you can instead learn magic that fools and entertains both magicians and laypeople.
►Hand-Picked Card Tricks:
The is a booklet that includes some of Steve’s now classic performance pieces along with a few lesser known, but equally strong items. It contains the complete text, performance tips, presentations, and background information on the items taught. This booklet is also the basis for some of his lectures, so you know everything has been audience tested.

►Counter Attack:
This is a collection of Steve’s extraordinary packet effects using cards from an ordinary deck. First, you are taught nine of Steve’s sleight of hand counts followed by eleven of Steve’s favorite impromptu packet routines. All have Steve’s trademark, humorous presentations that accompany the strong magic.
Techniques include: Third-Finger Buckle, Beamsley Count, Stem Count, Unbuckled Count, Head Count, Body Count, Two-Flusher Count, Flash Card Count, and Killer Count.
Routines include: The Perfect Shuffle (Scott Robinson), Bon Voyage, Back To Aces, Testosterone Test, Turning Heads, Twisting The Faces, Quick Change, Counterweight, Cold Cuts, Sunny Side Up, and Guys & Dolls.

Kainoa Harbottle was the first person invited to perform and lecture at the New York Coin Magic Seminar where he shared his advanced handling and techniques within very visual routines. The four routines that are explained here highlight his different approaches to the coins across plot.

►Spin Doctor:
An incredible 3-phase routine with fast-paced magic, followed by a surprise ending.
Three kicker endings they never see coming. The Ace of Spades placed on the table transforms into a blank card, then reappears between the aces in your hand, then the backs of those aces change to the colors of the rainbow. This is one of John Bannon’s favorite packet tricks because it packs a whole lot of magic into just a handful of cards.
Spin Doctor is a packet trick that packs a huge wallop. The sleights are easy to perform, and best of all, the cards are completely examinable at the end.

This is a very limited The Amazing Kreskin Edition that includes two books from his personal inventory.
It is an ideal way to present a mentalism routine while discussing the most famous mentalist in history and justifying the use of the two hardcover books.
You can read the spectator’s mind and write down the word they are thinking of. Ask them to yell out the word they are thinking of, then show the audience the word you wrote. They match.
But it is not over yet. As an afterthought have the spectator think of the last word on that page. You can now proceed to dramatically spell out the thought of word for a double miracle.
