MyMagic eNewsletter #986
January 2, 2022
First, I wanted to wish all of you a Happy New Year. The demand for my new Japanese Coin sets was very strong last week and I worked extra hard getting all the orders out even faster than usual. Many of you also followed my tip about my last release of 2021 and grabbed a copy of the Essential Sol Stone.
Which brings us to the official introduction to this new edition and the bonus collectible.
Sol Stone (1922-2021) was one of the most influential close-up sleight-of-hand artists in the New York area. At a time when everyone was focused on card magic Sol excelled at magic with coins. It is no coincidence that many of the pivotal contributions to that genre came out of New York over the past 50 years. It is safe to say that without Sol Stone, coin magic would not be as popular and advanced as it is today.
More than 50 of his best routines, ideas, and techniques were written by Stephen Hobbs, edited by Richard Kaufman, and published by Cassidy Alexander in 2012. It got great reviews and eventually sold out.
While I was helping Sol’s son Bob with some stuff, I realized that there was still a big demand for the book as copies were easily selling for three times the original price.
So, I contacted Cassidy and she agreed to sell me the rights. But I wanted to give the new edition some added value and I remembered that in 1947, Abbotts Magic published Sol’s first book, Patter Punches, which included 400+ jokes and one-liners he collected to use with magic. So, I contacted Greg Bordner and he kindly gave me permission to include it in this book.
You can watch my interview with Sol Stone, where we discuss Patter Punches: HERE
But I was not done yet. As many of the long-time subscribers to this newsletter remember, one of the only ways to get an autographed copy of Sol’s book was from me. At the time he signed my copy with a very nice autograph, and I reproduced it in the front of the book (without my name of course).
Funny thing is that it really looks like a handwritten autograph. Even funnier is when I signed copies for my friends it looked even more realistic, as you can see. A couple of them even wondered if they were real and I got him to sign them before he passed away.
But I wasn’t done yet. Bob gave me a box full the color photographs that Richard Kaufman took of Sol’s hands that Cassidy used to make the excellent illustrations. So, when you buy a copy directly from me you will get one of these one-of-a-kind collectibles.
I also decided to make it a softcover book and keep the price very low so more people can enjoy the magic of Sol Stone.

The compliments about our Japanese coins have been pouring in and the most frequent question was what do the characters on the coins say? Here is a graphic with the translation.
►Japanese Coins & Shell Set:
These very special coins are US Half Dollar size, they were stamped in brass, and were given an antique gold finish. The expanded shell was manufactured by making duplicate coins that were a little larger than a half dollar and then a lathe was used to hollow them out and create a perfect shell with full coverage. It is so good that you can show both sides of the shelled coin and you can’t tell that it is there.
The set includes four regular Japanese coins and a matching shell.
BONUS: Every purchase of the set will include access to a 20-minute video tutorial starring David Roth, Derek Dingle, and Michael Gallo.
