If you watched the tutorial for David Roth’s Portable Hole routine that I made, you saw me trace the origins of the hole concept in popular culture and even included a video of its first appearance in a cartoon.
I remember thinking at the time, while I was putting it together, that the concept could be used with a cigarette through quarter gimmick by finding a marker whose width is the same as the hole and using it to draw a black hole on the quarter, pushing the marker through, restoring it, and switching it for a regular (or borrowed) quarter with the black hole drawn on it.
These are the types of thoughts that race through my mind throughout the day… that I do nothing with, and eventually forget.
Today I will introduce you to a heavily gaffed card that creates a multiphase routine where you draw a hole on a card, penetrate it, shrink it, and vanish it, or transpose it.
►Imaginary Hole:
You can watch the complete routine in the trailer but there are other variants in the tutorial. Like holding the holed card over a phone, transporting the hole to a signed business card, and more.
The basic routine has you drawing a large black dot on the back of a playing card. That playing card is held at the fingertips, and with just a rub, the black dot transforms into a real hole. The marker is shown passing through this giant hole. You then give the large hole a rub, and it transforms into a smaller hole. One more magical gesture, and the hole vanishes, and you can show both sides of the card.

►Light Year:
The basic effect has you ask someone to name a two-digit number, then immediately display that named number in holes that have been permanently drilled through solid acrylic plates. The plates can be given out for examination, and the spectators will not be able to create any numbers with them.
The tutorial explains the simple procedure used to orient the tiles in order to display any two-digit number (without zeros). There are no moving parts, no flaps, magnets, or extra tiles. There is nothing to switch or ditch. These precision-engineered gimmicks make this easy to use and you can immediately repeat the routine with different numbers.

►Rubik Cube Shell Set:
This is a Rubik Cube shell that fits over a standard cube that is included with the set. The tutorial (which is in Japanese) shows you how to handle the shell and the cube and some basic routines.
This is really a utility device you can use for many different routines since the shell comes blank and you are given stickers to assemble it anyway you like. You can use it for a quick solve, a prediction, a vanish, an appearance, or the many other routines invented for shells both with cubes and other objects.

Stay happy, Meir
PS: The next MyMagic release is only a few days away. The props and packaging arrive on Monday and all that will be left to do is the tutorial and the actual assembly. Stay tuned.
PPS: Don’t forget to read the new magic quotes feature at the end of the newsletter.
