Lior Manor stopped the biggest countdown watch in Israel on Dec. 29 at 10pm as a publicity stunt on one of Israel’s highest rated TV talk shows. After concentrating for around 45 seconds he made the clock stop for one minute and then restored it to normal. This caused even more interest as it was reported on TV, radio and in newspapers. Manor is known for these types of stunts. In the more than 100 TV appearances he has already predicted election results, lottery numbers, performed blindfold drives, stopped pulses, etc…(1/3)

George Carl, the legendary pantomime artist, died on Saturday Jan. 1 at the age of 83. Carl appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and the Tonight Show many times — always bringing down the house. He also worked the Crazy Horse in Paris for many years and received the prestigious clowning award at the Circus of Monte Carlo. Carl can be seen performing segments from his show in the 1995 movie Funny Bones which starred Jerry Lewis and was also the last time he performed professionally. Francis Joseph Herman died on Jan. 4 in San Diego at the age of 84. Known to magicians as Frank Herman and several generations of TV audiences in the California area as “Skipper Frank,” he became a professional magician at the age of 15. His career spanned close to 70 years with live shows, TV shows, children’s shows and he even worked at Thayer’s Magic Studio and Bert Wheeler’s Magic Shop in the late 1930’s. He has been honored by the SAM, IBM, Magic Collector’s Association and was made a lifetime member at the Magic Castle. At the time of his death he was working on a book about his life to be titled, “Isn’t It Amazing?” Funeral services and a broken wand ceremony will be held on Sunday Jan. 9 at 1pm at the Eternal Hills Chapel in Oceanside, CA.(1/6)

Emil J. Trainor known to magicians as Joe Trainor died on Jan. 4 at the age of 64. Trainor was the current Vice Chairman of the International Magicians Society and was their World President from 1983 to 1993. He was also instrumental in the production of their many video programs. Uri Geller’s Tonight Show appearance gets some press. Speaking of Jay Leno Geller said, “He’s a complicated, very powerful man… I tried with Jay, but it didn’t work. Then I tried it with Tim Robbins, and it worked. I think actors are more sensitive people.” Speaking of his last appearance on the Tonight Show in 1973 with Johnny Carson when nothing worked he said, “It just proves to you that I’m not a magician, I’m not a machine.”
