One of the things I have always looked for are novel ways to introduce myself or icebreakers when I meet people while performing magic.
Every performer has spent countless hours thinking about what the first words s/he will say when they start their formal shows. It has to be engaging so you can capture your audience’s attention and keep it for the rest of the show.
For walk-around performances these introductory remarks can be stressful at first. Over the years I tried many introductions, gimmicks and tricks to start a conversation and get into the show. My favorite and easiest way to do it was to ask a question whose answer would trigger the magic.
I have been thinking about my latest release for many years, but everything fell into place earlier this year when I started talking to Rich Micucci whose company manufactured the badges for the NYC Police Department.
You see, I wanted a custom badge that I can carry and introduce myself with, as…
Meir Yedid… Magician.

When you walk up to people with what looks like a police badge, their first instinct is fear… until you say Magician. Then the fun can begin.
Akemi Yoshida, who does all my artwork, agreed to design the badge. It took many drafts until I was happy.
Along the way we started adding features to the Magician Badge. Look at it. You will see doves, magic wands, cups & balls, Japanese coins, playing cards, and even two reveals, incase you want to also do magic with it.

We also made it into a money clip so it can be attached to any wallet or close-up pouch, It can be used to carry money or used as a packet trick holder, It can be attached to your belt, It can be worn as a necklace, and in an emergency it can even be used as a brass-knuckles type of weapon.
It is made of heavy copper that was gold plated and then treated with black enamel and an additional antique fill. It is not a toy. It is a beautiful piece to carry and show around.
In addition to the badge you get access to a 12-minute instructional video that goes over its many uses and teaches three routines you can do with the hidden reveals. You will also learn my handling of Trevor Lewis’ Swivel Force Swindle and my handling of the 1089 Force using a spectator’s smart phone.

It adds a level credibility to magicians while at the same time adding humor to your introductions. It is a great icebreaker.
The next time you walk up to strangers you can pull out the badge as you say your name and title of Magician. It causes a moment of panic followed by relief and laughter.

Until next time,
Meir
