MyMagic eNewsletter #1,151
November 8, 2023
Was planning on a different newsletter for today but a bunch of coin things unexpectedly arrived.
The third shipment of the Obake Quarter Sets, which sold out in minutes, are back. The Silver edition of the Quadruple Spellbound which sold out in hours is back. Was also able to get 20 more of the Organic Copper Silver Brass Sets, so will extend the introductory price until they sell-out or next Sunday.
Was sorry to hear of the passing of the legendary Karl Fulves (Carl Anthony Fulves, July 27, 1938-February 16, 2023). His contributions to magic cannot be overstated. He managed to supply both magicians and non-magicians with a wealth of outstanding magic through his books and magazines.
I was friendly with him when I worked at Tannen’s, he would visit every few weeks to deliver booklets and magazines. We spoke about cards, and he even performed a few things for me at one time. Once I moved to New Jersey I saw him a few times and for a while he would phone me once a year with a very quick series of questions and would let me know when we could get together… which never happened.
One time Karl phoned to discuss the idea of doing a video series of his self-working card stuff, where he suggested I perform the magic and we would explain it together… similar to what I did with his friend Gene Maze. But I did not have the money at the time to pursue it.
Howard Wurst was one of his best friends, who also drove him around. Howard was also one of John Scarne’s best friends. My friend Mark Wurst who is Howard’s son, who is also a magician, sent me a series of private photos a few years ago and gave me permission to include one of them here. Did you recognize Scarne showing Fulves some card stuff?
►Obake Quarter Set:
“Obake” means ghost in Japanese, and this “ghost” coins set allows you to do some clean and impossible looking routines that cannot be done with other similar gimmicks.
The set includes two super magnetic quarters and a matching expanded shell that are made using real US Quarters. For some of the routines you will need some extra real US Quarters.

►Quadruple Spellbound:
Originally created in the 1970s and first published in the 1980s, this was one of Simon Aronson’s favorite routines, that he always carried with him and performed often.
The basic effect: You show an American half dollar. You wave your hand over it, and it changes into a Japanese coin with a hole through it. Wave your hand over the Japanese coin and it changes into a copper English penny. Wave your hand over the penny and it changes into an African coin with a hole in it. As a finale, the African coin changes back into the American half dollar.
In addition to the custom-made set of gaffed coins you also get a video tutorial with Simon Aronson performing and explaining his original handling, Meir Yedid teaching his versions of the Quadruple Spellbound, and Sol Stone teaching his Patriotic Poker Chips.

►Organic Copper Silver Brass Set:
The classic Copper, Silver, Brass routine is one of the most popular of all gaffed coin effects because of the many combinations possible. It was originally created by Pressley Guitar, based on a routine by Connie Haden. This version was designed by Ted Bogusta.
There are many routines and sequences in print and on video. The basic routine explained in the instructions starts with a Quarter, a Centavo, and a washer in one hand. The Quarter is taken away and visually changes places with the Centavo and washer. The sequence is repeated. A third phase happens with the coins changing places with the one in your pocket. Everything is examinable at the end.

►Revolution Book Test:
A book test full of surprises. It is a standard looking paperback Sherlock Holmes book, “A Study In Scarlet,” that has been gaffed so that a spectator can name any page to arrive at a word, which can be revealed in many different ways.
It uses the nine principle, as explained on the trailer, to cue you to what word the spectator is thinking of.
The tutorial includes many reveal strategies: A basic revelation, demonstrate a superhuman memory, seemingly reveal any word from the entire page, a number revelation, a confabulation routine on video, a name and place presentation, a drawing duplication, and how to know what song they’re thinking of. Also included is a wealth of valuable mentalism tips and strategies.

PS: Attended the Cardtopia convention this weekend and was wondering if a Cointopia convention might be in the future for coin flourishers! Coindistry!
