#6 – Scott Kim Muses [3/12/1996]
Besides practice a good magician has to be a dedicated student of the art, a creative thinker and have a unique form of self-expression. I have been gathering information about magicians who have taken these qualities and applied them to other fields and arts. In upcoming columns I will introduce you to some very special people and their output. The first is Scott Kim and what he does is amazing.
Scott Kim:

Mr. Kim is a master of what he calls “inversions.” If you give him a word or any name he will write it down – what is unbelievable is that if you turn it upside-down the words will look and read the same. Many people have begun to collect these inversions as if they were pieces of art – which they are.
As hard as this is to believe, he can also do two-way and three-way inversions. I am including two of these special inversions. The one on the left is right-side up and the one on the right is upside-down. I am including both views so if you do not have a printer you could still appreciate them. If you still don’t believe your eyes you could turn your monitor upside-down to check.

The first, a two-way inversion, is one he made for my friends. You can see that it reads Phyllis one way and Herbert if you turn it over.

The second is unbelievable. At first glance it looks like a hand (my trademark), on closer examination you will see my first name “MEIR” embedded in the hand. When the hand is turned over it now spells my last name “YEDID.” What is even more amazing is that Mr. Kim can visualize these things and create them with unbelievable speed. He made mine while watching my act (approximately 20 minutes) and my friends’ in less than five.
