Magician Derren Brown conjures up some spellbinding answers-Herts and Essex Observe
Derren Brown's nationwide tour Miracle is once again leaving audiences wide eyed in wonder. The king of magical illusion explains how the witnesses are just as much a part of the show as he is. As the master of psychological illusion, Derren Brown knew he wouldn't need to rely on divine intervention when he named his new stage show Miracle. Yet that didn't mean that as the tour began in March, he wasn't wracked with self-doubt. "It was quite a bold show and a bit of a risk in terms of whether or not it would actually work, whether the effects could actually be obtained and whether people would go with it."...

Famous magician can't make insurance fight disappear-Channel3000
When the lake drained, engineers discovered the dam actually ran under parts of the seven acres Rick and Susan Wilcox own. The magician and his wife/business partner, who have operated a theater on the main drag in the Wisconsin Dells since 1999, bought the land in 2002 and built their dream home a couple years later. "(Village of Lake Delton officials) told us, 'You don't own your land,'" said Rick Wilcox, on his deck overlooking the now-refilled lake. "So, we called our title insurance company and we said, 'We need your help. Somebody's challenging our title. You're the title insurance company, please protect us.' They said, 'No.'"..

Today in Comics History: Celebrating Mandrake the Magician
June 11 marks the anniversary of the first appearance of comics’ first superhero. Nah, not that lantern-jawed fellow in the red cape. The guy in the black cape and top hat who debuted a full four years earlier. Yeah, that guy. Mandrake the Magician. Mandrake the Magician first appeared in 1934 and was the creation of Lee Falk, who would also go on to create The Phantom in 1936. Falk had written and drawn the first two weeks’ worth of strips himself as a teenager, but after the strip was picked up by King Features Syndicate ten years later, Phil Davis became the strip’s illustrator. Following Davis’s death in 1964, Fred Fredericks took over as illustrator and, after Falk’s death in 1999, as writer as well. The strip ended in 2013, upon Fredericks’s retirement...

BBC America's 'Strange' magic will dazzle you
Watch BBC America pull a rabbit out of a hat. In truth, the network’s new “Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell” goes way beyond old hat tricks. It is a miniseries about magic that makes magic of its own, and you’ll be dazzled when it premieres Saturday, perhaps to the point of saying, “How did they do that?” The miniseries, based on the best-seller of the same name by Susanna Clarke, is set during the Napoleonic Wars. Mr. Norrell (Eddie Marsan) is a reclusive magician living in the North of England. He does not openly practice his craft because magic has all but disappeared from England, a fact he finds regrettable...

'Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell' brings BBC magic to American screen
This new seven-part BBC America series, which launches at 10 p.m. Saturday, focuses on the relationship between two British magicians in the early 19th century, when previously widespread belief in magic was vanishing. Carvel’s Jonathan Strange is an upstart who believes he can bring magic back. Eddie Marsan’s Norrell is a cautious older man who has already proved his skills. Their rivalry not only produces precarious situations, but raises the whole question of whether belief in magic is as important as magic itself...

JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL Review: Magician Wars Begin on BBC America
In Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, the Napoleonic wars play second fiddle to the “magician wars” of the same era. In the BBC series’ alternate universe (based on Susanna Clarke’s best-selling novel), two dueling magicians begin to discover their powers — and their differences — as part of the fulfillment of a prophesy that has brought magic back to England after 300 years...

Strange Magic Bubbles Up In New 'Mr Norrell' Adaptation
Magic is back in England. A decade ago, the author Susanna Clarke released her first and only novel: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell became a sensation. The author Neil Gaiman pronounced it “unquestionably, the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last 70 years.” Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the story combines history and fantasy. A shy country gentleman, Mr. Norrell, teams up with a dashing hero Jonathan Strange, to save England with magic — and now, it’s been made into a seven-episode TV series. “We think of it as a movie in seven parts,” writer Peter Harness tells NPR’s Ari Shapiro. “It starts off with a ‘Once Upon a Time’ and it ends up with a not so very happily ever after.”..
