Artist-Magician discusses art collecting, magic history
A packed audience at the Yale School of Art was treated to a glimpse into the life and artwork of an armless 17th-century artist on Tuesday night. Renowned magician and art collector Ricky Jay came to the Yale School of Art’s 36 Edgewood Ave. building to speak as part of its weekly lecture series. His hour-long talk, which coincided with the opening of a new School of Art exhibition titled “Side Show,” focused on the accomplishments of sideshow performer Matthew Buchinger, an armless conjurer and calligrapher. Jay noted that Buchinger is his favorite figure in the history of magic. “This is a man with no arms who was writing words so small we literally cannot see with our naked eye,” Jay said. “If you believe this, you’ll believe anything.”

Q&A With Local Celebrity Steve Cohen-Westchester Magazine
Q: You describe your style of magic as a thinking man’s magic, but have you ever been tempted to cross over into the flashy side of magic? Big, flashy magic certainly surprises you in the moment, but it rarely lingers with you after the performance. When I designed my show, I wanted to create seemingly impossible moments that guests would talk about for years afterward. ..

Film Review: 'An Honest Liar'-Variety
“An Honest Liar” is a highly entertaining portrait of James “the Amazing” Randi, a magician-cum-escape artist who, like his role model, Houdini, eventually turned his primary attention to debunking professional mystics, telepathists and other “supernatural” charlatans. Justin Weinstein and Tyler Measom’s documentary bounces along enjoyably on a sea of archival clips from Randi’s high-profile career, with latter-day input from numerous celebrity pals (and at least one famous foe). It gains added dimension from the subject’s late-in-life coming out as a gay man, and from a different sort of “coming out” by his longtime lover, who turned out to be hiding a secret identity. Prospects are good for niche home-format sales and possible limited theatrical release..

Larry Wilmore can keep calm. But can he carry the show?-Macleans
