Aaron C. Dutton, Marine, engineer & magician -Baltimore Sun
Aaron C. Dutton, who walked away from a scholarship at Morehouse University to join the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17, died from stroke complications on Aug. 25. The 40-year Baltimore resident was 74. But one of his biggest passions dated back to his childhood in New Orleans. He got a magic set as a gift and started a quest to learn magic tricks. As a child, he frequently visited a magic shop—one of the places he could enter where skin color didn't matter, his wife said. Dutton became enthralled with card and coin magic as he grew older. He later joined the local chapter of the Society of American Magicians and became friends with Arturo de Ascanio of Spain, considered one of the world's best magicians. The friendship developed after Dutton interpreted for de Ascanio at a magic convention in Las Vegas.

Even though the original Orpheum burned down a month after Houdini's show, the new building, erected in 1928, sits on the same site. "Wow, that's fabulous," Penn Jillette said in a recent interview from his home in Las Vegas. "It is quite a treat. We got a few places we play that he played, but not many. Most of them are gone now.".

'Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles': Telluride Review
An in-depth study of Orson Welles' singular life and career would run the length of a miniseries, but Chuck Workman engagingly hits a good many highlights in stone-skipping fashion in Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles. Additionally, by delving into the protean talent's bag of unfinished projects, the veteran documentary and clips-reel whiz tries to counter the view that Welles had a fear of completion later in life; as the film shows, he was always working, however under-financed he may have been.

But on Wednesday, it was non-Nevadan Mat Franco who became the first magician ever to win NBC’s talent contest and its $1 million prize. Still, the city is so thick with magicians that it’s no surprise Las Vegas can claim a little piece of the 25-year-old magician’s victory. “It’s not little at all,” Franco said by telephone from New York today. “Jeff McBride was the biggest magic influence in my life growing up,” he says of the Las Vegas-based veteran who stages the monthly event “Wonderground” in Henderson.
