Siegfried and Roy and Everything After
Siegfried and Roy’s show at The Mirage has been closed for a decade. Yet for all the time that has passed, their fans remain ardent, and no Strip headliner has emerged as their equal. There is still a mullet-and-tiger-shaped vacuum in the hearts and minds of tourists and Las Vegans. October 3 will mark 10 years since the era-ending “incident,” as insiders call it. “It was not an ‘attack,’ and it was not an ‘accident,’” says the magicians’ longtime manager Bernie Yuman...

The keynote speaker of the day was magician, escape artist and mind-reader Bob Fellows who also wrote the book “Easily Fooled.” “A lot of people would be concerned about being locked up in something physical,” Fellow said. “We wouldn’t want to be locked up in a jail cell and we certainly wouldn’t want to be locked up in a water torture box, but I think it is more dangerous if we are trapped in a way of thinking.”...

Biggest miracle was 'Roy himself' - Las Vegas Review-Journal
Fischbacher, however, acknowledged in rare detail that “Roy realized it was going to be a little tough because we had partied.” Not just at the Oct. 2 birthday party, but earlier that morning, as well, at a private residence. At that V.I.P. party, they arrived about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 3, following their two performances, and left about 6 a.m. Siegfried said Horn changed his routine with Montecore that night. When Montecore placed his weight on Horn by resting his paws on Horn’s shoulders, “Roy couldn’t handle the weight. He felt dizzy, strange. He was passing out.” Horn would normally give Montecore a treat after that routine, but “because Roy felt strange, he (Montecore) don’t get a treat.” When Montecore wandered to the front of the stage, and Horn was struggling to control him, that’s when Horn had a small stroke, said Siegfried...

The Great Kramien -- legendary traveling magician from Portland -
When Stan Kramien's era ended, his son needed to do something with the old man's props. The gear, much of it nearly 60 years old, sat in a Newberg warehouse. Once, the equipment defined the proud man and who he was. Now it was a sad reminder of all he'd lost and was no longer. In his prime, the magician crisscrossed the country, performing 200 times a year in big-city auditoriums, small-town theaters and high school gyms. He'd arrive in his Cadillac, leading the way for a truck and bus carrying an entourage, including long-legged stage assistants in revealing outfits and high heels....

Reflecting on the night that ended Siegfried & Roy's Vegas reign - Las Vegas Weekly
On October 3, 2003, a 380-pound white tiger named Montecore nearly killed his beloved master, the illusionist Roy Horn, onstage in front of thousands of patrons. It was a traumatic, gory news event, the primary focus of which was the fate of Horn. In the week that followed, as he lingered between life and death only to be saved by a heroic but wild surgery that involved removing a piece of his skull and storing it in his abdomen until his cranial swelling subsided, the victim’s status largely dominated the story...
