Film Review: Desperate Acts of Magic
Joe Tyler Gold, who wrote and co-directed Desperate Acts of Magic with Tammy Caplan, is himself a former birthday-party magician, and this slight yet quite endearing film benefits from the scruffily observed authenticity he brings to it, as well as a nicely dry sense of humor and full awareness of the absurdity of both his premise and profession.

Michael Brandwein can still remember the first time he saw a magician: He was 4 years old, and the experience left quite an impression on him. “The magician did something that changed my life,” said Brandwein, swinging a handkerchief like a lasso and creating a knot, demonstrating the magic trick the magician performed. “He got me interested in studying process.” Immersing himself in the study of magic and trying to simply make magic happen, Brandwein said his parents became worried about him.

Magician's headline prediction eerily close to Boston bombing case
If you foresee something, say something: Did a local magician/mentalist predict the terrorist bombings in Boston? In a fundraising stunt on April 6 at Big Guy's Magic Shop in Pewaukee, Paul Kastle wrote down what he thought the front page headline would be in the April 20 Journal Sentinel... On April 23, everyone gathered at the shop again and the cans were fished from the cake and opened. Vrakas read aloud Kastle's headline prediction: "Got them. Suspects in custody."
