Street performer eyes bayside park as venue - Delaware Wave
Popular Boardwalk magician George Gilbert is taking initiative to begin a new street performer tradition in Ocean City. It's not involved in a lawsuit, and will likely avoid blowback from town officials -- two pluses that buskers lately haven't been used to. It could even help alleviate some of the tension that has built up through the year among performers, town officials and a selection of Boardwalk merchants....

Magic leap for 'Nutcracker'
A friend put Weiss in touch with Rick Thomas, whose magic act in Las Vegas is famous for its startling disappearances of tigers and motorcycles. Thomas, who has dance in his background (he and his sister were national junior ballroom champions), was intrigued by the offer to work on a ballet. "I haven't ever been involved with a production in which the magic was not the whole show, but with my background, I said 'absolutely!' " Thomas said. Weiss and Thomas were both of the same mind about the scale of the new effects. "We didn't want it to be, 'here's the story, but now we're going to stop for a big illusion,'" Thomas said. The pair agreed that the effects should fit into the story's Victorian time period, especially in the Christmas party sequence. The results, according to Thomas, include every major form of magic, with objects and people appearing, disappearing, floating or flying.
