affordable to have magic

The Magical Mind of Persi Diaconis - The
Chronicle
Persi Diaconis's unlikely scholarly
career in mathematics began with a
disappearing act. He was 14 years old
and obsessed with magic, spending much
of his free time in or around Tannen's
Magic Store, on Times Square, where
sleight-of-hand masters regularly
gathered to show off tricks and to
gossip. There, one of the most
influential magicians of the past
century, a card maestro named Dai
Vernon, saw Diaconis's prodigious trick
dealing and invited the young man to
leave New York and join him on the road.

Breaking the spell: How did a quiet
anthropologist infiltrate Paris's
secretive Magic Circle? - The
Independent
Graham Jones might not have been able to
pull a rabbit out of a hat at a kids'
party, but he was going to have to make
a pain au chocolat appear from nowhere
for the Magic Circle of Paris. For five
months, the softly spoken anthropologist
from MIT, who hadn't performed a magic
trick since he was a child, worked hard
to master the techniques needed to
predict, Derren Brown-style, the pastry
someone would choose and to build the
props to make the chosen pastry appear
on command in front of some of France's
greatest magicians....

Magician Brushwood returns to amaze
Rowan - Whit
Brian Brushwood performed his bizarre
magic routine in the Student Center Pit
on Friday, Oct. 14 as a part of Rowan
After Hours. Brushwood first asked the
entire audience, “Would you guys like to
see traditional tricks, or some freaky
tricks?” The audience responded with
one, extremely loud response. He started
off with a small biography about himself
and showed a video of a little boy
learning to do the “traditional” tricks.
He then showed another video of tricks
he tried to learn as a kid, and called a
member of the audience up to assist him.
To everyone’s surprise, he then
proceeded to stick a metal bar through
his un-pierced tongue, grossing out and
exciting the entire audience....

everything had an aura of magic."..

Sleights of hand, sleights of mind - The
Guardian
The Conjurer, by Hieronymus Bosch,
depicts a medieval magician performing
for a small crowd, while pickpockets
steal the spectators' belongings. The
painting, on display at the Musée
Municipal in St.-Germain-en-Laye,
France, illustrates that magicians have
long known how to hack into our mental
processes. The principles of magic,
refined and perfected over the
centuries, provide neuroscientists with
new ways to study the brain and could
help them in their quest to reveal how
the organ performs the greatest trick of
all - consciousness itself....

a set of forks on the table. “Eagle

he adds: “Well... they produce the

and I can see the last prong of the fork
bending downwards. I am not sure if I am
