Ricki
Dunn, best known for his hysterical pickpocket act, died on Saturday in Las Vegas. He was
in the hospital at the time recovering from a quadruple bypass. He began his career
working side-shows and carnivals as a fire eater and later became a magician. His
pickpocket routine was actually disguised as a magic act where he brought several people
on stage and in the guise of performing magic stole their watches, wallets, belts, ties,
glasses, suspenders and even the shirt off their back. Billed as "Americas
Funniest Pickpocket" he died at the age of 69.(1/25)

David Copperfield called off his shows in Brazil because of
the drop in its currency, according to the O Estado De Sao Paulo newspaper. The Brazilian
currency has plunged about 30 percent against the US dollar since Jan. 12. Many other
artists have also cancelled given the choice of a 30% pay cut or calling off the

Abril Lamarque died Jan. 25 at the age of 94. Born in Cuba
on Aug. 28, 1904 and later moved to NYC. Lamarque was the original illustrator for
Hugards Magic Monthly. Several of his original effects can be found in My Best by
J.G. Thompson and in Hugards Magic Monthly. He had a very strong influence on the
Society of American Magicians, Parent Assembly since the 1940s and was their
"artist in residence." He was very well known in the art world as an art
director to several leading magazines. A memorial "Broken Wand" service will be
held at the Society of Illustrators in New York City on Mar. 4.(1/27)

Condolences to Jack Ferero whose wife Annette died on Jan.
27 after a long struggle with cancer. Jack was one of the owners of Tannens Magic in
the 1970s and 80s. Visitations will be at the Aloia Funeral Home (180 Harrison Ave.,

The Louisiana Magic Weekend has announced their lineup and

The 52 registrants to the 1999 Professional
Performers'
Workshop in Hollywood were treated to a late night tour of the Blackstone warehouse by Gay
Blackstone and a half-day session with Dom DeLouise. These special events supplemented the
teaching sessions which focused on the business end of being a magician. Also part of the
convention were visits to the Magic Castle, Wizards, and Magicopolis.(1/31)
